Independent publisher, Type Eighteen Books, and owner Mary Vensel White announce the first three books in a new novella collection inspired by the design of NYRB Classics. The novellas will be published in February of 2025. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT
What could be cozier than a solitary lighthouse, a small-town diner, and a respectable and orderly boarding house?
Independent press, Type Eighteen Books, is releasing a collection of three new novellas in February of 2025, with just such settings. These novellas are a perfect read for winter, not only because of their perfectly placed settings, but because of their shared theme of relationship—something that, for better or worse, we all bump up against no matter the season.
The collection was inspired by the New York Review of Books “Classics” series. Mary Vensel White, Founder of Type Eighteen Books, says, “I love the coordinated design of their collection. The distinctive covers are widely recognizable, and readers have grown to trust the brand.” Mary hopes that readers will give this new collection of novellas a try.
The set includes:
Michael Loyd Gray’s Night Hawks—a tender novella with a touch of noir, in which a hardworking waitress, a young pregnant one, a diner owner, and an Army Veteran converge under the fluorescent glow of the eatery and discover that family is found in unlikely places.
Peter J. Dellolio’s The Vigil—a stunning meditation on innocence and attachment, in which grieving lighthouse keeper Ralph Unda, binoculars in hand, searches the waters night after night for his missing daughter and finds that absolute love extends beyond the limits of time and space.
Tracy Wise’s Madame Sorel’s Lodger—a bold exploration of the encompassing drive of creativity and art, in which formidable Madame Sorel receives a tormented artist lodger, whose arrival hurtles her and the village towards a stunning and fateful conclusion and explores the bonds of community and friendship, and ultimately, what makes us human.
Mary, who started Type Eighteen Books two years ago, says her goal is to provide a home for books that might fall outside of traditional forms, including shorter, experimental works. She says, “Simply stated, Type Eighteen Books wants to publish great stories by unforgettable voices. Our aim is to give authors a fantastic publishing experience and to give readers a fantastic reading experience.”
