FORT LAUDERDALE (October 3, 2022) – Take Stock in Children of Broward, which focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty for low-income, academically qualified students by providing opportunities for a postsecondary education, is excited to announce the addition of three new members to its Board of Directors: Sharon Abramson, Michelle Davis Lewin and Josh Miller. Elected at the August board meeting, they will each serve a three-year term.

“The directors and I are proud to welcome these talented individuals to the board,” said Amanda Frey, executive director of Take Stock in Children of Broward. “It takes people from all areas of the community to make a difference, and we are excited to have them on our team.”

Each of the new board members brings with them a unique perspective and experience and the same unyielding drive to make a difference and create opportunities for Broward County students.

“Sharon, Michelle and Josh will be incredible assets in achieving our goal of creating awareness of the impact Take Stock in Children of Broward has on youth in our community and preserving the integrity of the programming Take Stock offers,” said Board Chair Merick Lewin, CEO of Icarmandias. “As we continue to help students in our community achieve their maximum potential, I look forward to the additional expertise and contributions these individuals will offer.”

Sharon is a skilled public relations, marketing, and events professional. Sharon has held high-level marketing roles at the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, which owns the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Denison Yacht Sales, Merle Wood & Associates, and Robert Allen Law. She started her career in 2011 as an AmeriCorps member with Take Stock in Children of Broward County, which inspired her to pursue school counseling. She has helped hundreds of students and their families navigate college applications, military academy appointments, and applying to scholarships and financial aid, and she is excited to bring this experience to the board of the same organization where she began her career 11 years ago.

Josh is a financial planner with Omega Wealth Planners of Raymond James who coordinates the team’s wealth management planning. He is involved with the Coral Springs-Parkland Rotary Club, part of the Community Relations Council and Young Leadership Division of the Jewish Federation of Broward County, a Brotherhood Board member and project volunteer with Congregation Kol Tikvah in Parkland, and a volunteer with Good Karma Pet Adoption Center. ABOUT TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN:
The mission of Take Stock in Children of Broward County is to break the cycle of poverty for low-income, academically qualified students by providing opportunities for a postsecondary education. It is the Broward County affiliate of a statewide Florida nonprofit organization that for 27 years has provided a unique opportunity for low-income and at-risk students to escape the cycle of poverty through education. Take Stock in Children offers students caring volunteer mentors, student advocacy, college readiness, and college scholarships. Its comprehensive services start in middle school, continue through high school, and include postsecondary retention and completion services. TSIC has received state and national recognition for its exemplary successes. TSIC was recognized by the State of Florida as a flagship mentoring program as demonstrated in a study performed by the state's government accountability office, which determined that TSIC outperformed its peers in every category.

Of Broward County's low-income, at-risk student population, only 67% graduate from high school, and only 53% of these students are expected to enroll in college within the first year of high school graduation. Since 1995, Take Stock in Children statewide has provided 36,239 children with scholarships and mentors. Over 98% of TSIC scholars graduate high school and 96% go on to pursue a postsecondary education, with a 70% college graduation rate, well over the national average. Locally, TSIC has served 1,872 of these students and awarded nearly $16.6 million in scholarships! For more information, call (754) 600-9857 or visit www.TakeStockBrowardFL.org.
