Not-for-profit AminoFacts evaluates common amino acid supplement brands to determine whether they are sourced from plants or animals. Announces call for consumers to submit brands for evaluation and have up to five chances to win supplements for a year. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT
AminoFacts, an independent, non-profit organization based in the US that advocates for labeling transparency around Food Grade Amino Acids in dietary supplements, has started helping consumers investigate what’s not on the labels of popular brands. The organization’s goal is to make it easier for consumers to determine which brands source their amino acids from plants versus animals and is also providing an assessment of manufacturing processes and various certifications, including vegan, organic and non-GMO. The assessments are based on publicly available information along with details provided by the brands’ customer service representatives.
AminoFacts is accepting consumer submissions of specific amino acid supplement brands and products and conducting evaluations into how well those products support vegan and plant-based lifestyle preferences.
AminoFacts assesses the products using a Five-Leaf System. The system is designed to provide an at-a-glance direction for which products are the most friendly to animals and the environment. Products are evaluated across the following key factors: Sourcing, Animal Treatment, Label Transparency, Manufacturing Processes, Certifications, and Lab Testing Practices.
“Supplements can be a great way to make sure you are getting the amino acids you need for overall health,” said AminoFacts Board Member David Madsen, Ph.D. “But not all amino acids are created equal. Many consumers may not be aware that their supplements are made with materials derived from animal parts; and many have fillers and other additives. Also, manufacturing processes vary on their impact on the environment. AminoFacts can help consumers navigate these questions.”
To submit a product, consumers can visit aminofacts.org/sweeps and enter up to five brand and product names and their own contact information for follow up. AminoFacts will then evaluate the brand and post an assessment on aminofacts.org.
Consumers who participate in this Decode the Label program will be entered into a drawing to receive free amino acid supplements for a year. Each product submission equals one chance to win (terms and conditions apply).
About AminoFacts
AminoFacts is an independent, non-profit organization that brings transparency to sourcing and production processes around food grade amino acids, a significant ingredient in many dietary supplements, so that consumers know more about what they’re putting into their bodies. The organization was established as a response to comprehensive public opinion research in the San Francisco metropolitan area that showed little knowledge, even among active supplement takers, of where amino acids are sourced and how they are made. AminoFacts is dedicated to providing information on the industry’s sourcing and manufacturing trends, along with information on leading U.S. brands. The organization’s advisors include experts on supplements, regulatory requirements and manufacturing processes for food grade amino acids, as well as scientists and leaders within the food and dietary supplement sectors.
