South Nassau Communities Hospital is ranked No. 20 among the 170 hospitals in the state of New York, as well as No. 20 among the 118 hospitals in the New York metropolitan area in the U.S. News & World Report's latest Best Hospitals rankings. The hospital's Division of Urology was ranked 35th nationally. Several other specialties ranked "high performing," including diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology & GI surgery, and orthopedics, and South Nassau also was ranked "high performing" for two procedures and conditions: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiac procedures.

South Nassau is the Long Island flagship hospital of the world-renowned Mount Sinai Health System. The Mount Sinai Hospital is ranked No. 14 nationally, up four spots from last year, and eight departments were ranked among the top 20 nationally in their specialties .

"Our ranking is a direct result of our commitment to excellence and our mission to treat our patients with leading-edge medical technologies and adhere to the highest standards in patient safety and care," said Richard J. Murphy, South Nassau's president and CEO. "I am proud of the collaboration between our physicians, nurses and patient care team and thank them for their commitment to the communities we serve. Hospital rankings are not a perfect way of measuring quality care as the health care system is very complex, with many factors impacting patient outcomes. However, the U.S. News rankings are among the most respected in the industry and we are honored to be recognized for the quality care we provide here every day."

"We are especially pleased that our urology division, under the leadership of Dr. Michael Herman, achieved a nationally ranking for the first time. This is no small accomplishment and reflects the dedication of Dr. Herman and his team to raise the bar with regard to our standards of care in this important area."

Now in its 27th year, the U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or added risk because of other health problems or age. To produce the rankings, U.S. News evaluates data on nearly 5,000 hospitals in 16 adult specialties, 9 adult procedures and conditions and 10 pediatric specialties. To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients.
