Independent record label "Produced by a Girl" is on the hunt for unsigned artists. Based in Portland, OR and led by CEO Mary Knoblock, Produced by a Girl Records is starting to plant seeds in the music industry to spread the word about artist, and producer opportunities under her label. During a meet up with Mary, we sat down in beautiful Portland, OR to learn how the label envisions helping underground artists build their brand, what criteria they look for in artists, and advice for emerging artists who are trying to break into the music business.

Hi Mary! Thank you so much for making time to discuss this ground-breaking label. Can you give us a little introduction to Produced by a Girl Records?

Produced by a Girl Records was started in my home studio in Portland, Oregon. As a music producer and artist, I started thinking about ways to help other artists build their brand online after seeing my music marketing formula & approach work to bring me an amazing undisclosed opportunity in the music industry. After producing 8 albums on my own, from start to finish, as well as mastering on LANDR, then distributing my original albums in TuneCore, to releasing them online and through social media-I realized this was a process not many artists understood or had a grasp on. With my art background and business marketing acumen, I was able to piece together a relatively repeatable process of showcasing my music releases on Instagram. Slowly but surely, I built connections that taught me a bit more about the music industry. Seeing the metoo movement was another powerful catalyst behind this label. The timing was just right. I had an overwhelming passion to create a space for female artists to feel safe building their brand and talent at a label that would intuitively understand how to bring out their talent in an authentic way as well as bring them to the journey they wanted for their artistry. It’s incredibly feminine and powerful. And amazinging enough, the main encourager behind Produced by a Girl Records is a talented male in the music industry. I believe we have to take radical ownership of our path and experience in this new world and bring people together in a meaningful way that gives honor and respect to every gender equally. Produced by a Girl Records isn’t just a label. It’s turned into a movement as well as we see by an unnamed artist who wishes to remain anonymous, “Produced By a Girl.” She and I sat down to discuss this incredible vision with her team and the rest is well, going to be written in history. ;)

Produced by a Girl Records was founded with the goal of helping female underground artists.

How has the label maintained it's philosophy?

We start with an overall assessment of an artist’s current situation. From where their numbers are at, to their online presence, to their overall talent factor, and music catalogue. Then we look at where they want to go - do they have the tenacity to make it in this industry? Finally we look at the overall brand image they’re presenting. After we identify their starting point we build out a plan to launch them further in their music journey. Our goal is to position them to become self sustaining independent artists or have them be ready with their whole package for a label that may want to sign them. We give women undivided attention to help build a solid structure to set launch their music careers from while offering basic contracts in exchange for all the artist development that often big labels don’t have time or money for anymore. Because my formula has worked for myself and our main artist we do marketing for, Produced by a Girl, we feel we have what it takes to take on more artists. Female artists can be assured that whatever we bring in our label, we have tried and tested on my own music journey.

What advice can you give to emerging artists who are trying to break into the music business?

Be you. Just be you in the music you write or produce. I can spot authenticity a mile away being in the millenial/xenial generation- I see through the facade and can spot what about an artist that is unique, that will resonate with the mass population. If you have an authentic set of songs and authentic social posts, it’s much better than just trying to fit in with the masses. Being a painter my whole life, I can spot other authentic artists quickly. They are the ones focused on the craft, not trying to impress anyone, sharing good content and just loving the art of creating music and art. I see you.

These days, do artists/bands need to be developed and established before you sign them?

No, this is what our label specializes in-artist development. I am going to teach female artists how to develop their brand and presence in their music while they create work. I will teach them the same formula I used to break into the music industry. I sign artists who have passion and tenacity to grow their image and music in anticipation of a bigger label coming in to represent them..

You sign an artist to Produced by a Girl Records. What happens next? Can you give us a general overview?

The artist can take generally different customized paths: either they stay in development for 1 - 2 years working on their album, going to the studio, recording, working on their overall brand image, developing artist relationships in the industry etc. Or, if they have an artist manager, or agent, we work with them to support their overall timelines for releases, shows, etc. and focus on developing their digital online presence and marketing strategy for attracting big labels if desired. Every artist will have a customized development plan that is uniquely tailored to their artist needs.

Thanks for the brief interview and mass amount of information! Anything else you’d like to add?

Sure, our main artist, Produced by a Girl wanted to share this advice with all the artists out there: “Go out and change the world with your music. Don’t worry about the labels finding you, attract them to you through your authenticity. Live for the music, the experience, the day to day joy of creating music that can change the world.” Go follow her on IG producedbyagirl and email us at producedbyagirlgmail.com to submit your demos.
