Through heroic actions and quick thinking, officers from the Gardena Police Department transported an 18-month-old to Memorial Hospital of Gardena (MHG), giving doctors and nurses the time they needed to provide life-saving care.
On Friday, June 15, Gardena PD received a call from a frantic mother reporting that her son was not breathing. Officers quickly arrived on the scene and immediately noted the urgency of the situation. The child was running a high fever and stopped breathing after convulsing due to the high temperature. With concern that there was not enough time to wait for the fire department or an ambulance, the officers sprang into action and took the child directly to MHG.
Upon arrival, Officer Jose Avalos ran through the emergency room doors with the child in his arms. As a father of two, he said that his “fatherly instincts” took over as he rushed the small boy to the hospital. While he was required to return to duty, he returned to the hospital later to check on the boy.
MHG doctors and nurses took over seconds after the officers entered the ER, and are happy to report that the child has returned home and is recovering. “It is an honor to work with the Gardena Police Department and all of the first responders in our community,” said Kathy Wojno, Chief Executive Officer of MHG. “By working together, these officers along with our dedicated team of doctors, nurses and staff were able to save a life.”
