FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT
The charity WORLDwrite, with support from the Women’s Vote Centenary Grant Scheme, is set to run an extraordinary day of events on International Women’s Day 8th March. These events will celebrate the first women getting the vote and, in particular, the campaigning of East End heroine, suffragette and revolutionary Sylvia Pankhurst.
Starting with a breakfast reception in Hackney, which will be attended by the charity’s contemporary heroines including Dame Ann Leslie, Ann Furedi CEO of BPAS and Director of the Academy of Ideas Claire Fox, awards based on scrolls designed by Sylvia Pankhurst will be presented.
WORLDwrite Director Ceri Dingle said today: “We wanted to mark the occasion by highlighting women whose political campaigning is in keeping with suffragettes like Sylvia Pankhurst. Women who see men as allies not enemies, who see women as robust equals not vulnerable victims and whose work exemplifies the fight for
freedom and democracy. Unlike the virtue signalling of current celebrity campaigns or the whinging of very well-off women, these real world heroines are not fearful of men’s advances or poor etiquette but are concerned to deal with more important issues from low pay to decriminalising abortion to attacks on civil liberties and democracy or international relations. They are worth celebrating and we salute them.”
The full list of Freedom Scroll recipients are attached.
Just as Sylvia presented the scrolls she'd designed to newly freed suffragettes at breakfast events, these modern heroines will be presented Freedom Scrolls at a breakfast reception at The Clapton Table Cafe & Bistro (159 Lower Clapton Rd, E5 8EQ) on International Women's Day, Thursday March 8th at 10am. Tickets for this
free event are free to the public and are available here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/freedom-breakfast-reception-presentation-tickets-43317348355
The presentations will be made by spiked columnist and author Ella Whelan. Bubbly, coffee and cakes will be served.
The Freedom Breakfast is part of an extraordinary day of events arranged by the charity which are all free to attend. These include a Gala film screening, Suffragette Tea Party and filmed discussion programme. Full details are available on the charity website at http://www.worldbytes.org/meet-the-crew/freedomawards/
