Buddhist Council Hosts Vesak Program in NYC

The Buddhist Council of NY invites you to its 30th Anniversary Vesak celebration at Saint Peter's Church in NYC on Sun., May 15 at 6:30pm. The program includes a peace parade, dharma talks, cultural performances and more.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, New York, NY—The Buddhist Council of New York, an association of diverse and international Buddhist temples and organizations, is pleased to announce that it will celebrate its 30th Anniversary Vesak event with a public program on May 15, 2016. Vesak marks the traditional celebration of the Buddha’s life milestones including his birthday, enlightenment and passing away into nirvana. Vesak is celebrated in various ways in countries around the world. Celebrating Vesak involves making special efforts to reduce the suffering of sentient beings and foster happiness and blessings for all. The program to be held at Saint Peter’s Church, 619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street, New York, NY 10022, from 6:30 – 9:00 pm, is free of charge and open to everyone.

With the theme “Loving-kindness, Compassion and Peace,” the 30th Anniversary Vesak program will include:
• A peace parade and bathing a baby Buddha
• Meditation, Traditional Buddhist chants and music,
• Talks by Roshi Pat Enkyo O’Hara, Venerable Aluthgama Dhammajothi Thero, and Irene Woodard
Cultural performances will include a Chinese lion dance and a Tibetan children’s performance, Cambodian dance and drumming, as well as a Bangladeshi dance. The event is co-sponsored by Saint Peter’s Church.

About the Speakers
Keynote speaker Roshi Pat Enkyo O’Hara is Abbot of the Village Zendo in New York, NY. She is also a Founding Teacher of the Zen Peacemaker Family, a spiritual and social action association.
Venerable Aluthgama Dhammajothi Thero is a Buddhist monk, born in Sri Lanka. He serves in the leading role as the vice president of the Buddhist Vihara in Queens, NY.

Irene Woodard is the Head of Practice and Education at Sky Lake Shambhala Meditation and Retreat Center in Rosendale, NY.
