Easy Listening: Bringing music into your outdoor room

Music is a key element for ambiance, whether you’re hosting a dance party or a relaxing dinner with friends. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Woodbury, NJ – March 7, 2017 Many homes have televisions with excellent sound capabilities and perhaps a surround-sound system. Music is a key element for ambiance, whether you’re hosting a dance party or a relaxing dinner with friends. Why, then, do so many of us opt for tinny sounds from a transistor radio or our dinky phone speaker when we’re out on the patio? Weatherproof speakers and systems are the answer to the lack of sound in your garden.

“Usually when we’re outside, we’re busy,” said John Vitiello, Owner and President of Alpine Home Media in Tappan, NY. “Music is perfect for that. Unlike having to keep an eye on the TV like we do inside, outside we’re involved in activities like cooking, eating or swimming. Having music playing in the background adds to the experience.

Many of us will lug a small bluetooth speaker out to the backyard or place our phones on the patio table. Mr. Vitiello encourages homeowners to think outside those little boxes. “Small speakers don’t sound as rich, as full, especially outside,” Mr. Vitiello said. “Inside, the sound stays in the room. Outside it goes everywhere. You need horsepower.” A subwoofer that looks somewhat like a beer keg with a bronze mushroom cap is buried. The cap stays above ground. The stereo speakers, bullet-shaped bronze casings resembling footpath lights, are placed around the yard. “The subwoofer provides the rich base where the other speakers do the rest,” said Mr. Vitiello. “People love it.”

If you’re installing a patio, contact a sound specialist during the design process. Although the stereo wiring is low-voltage and doesn’t need to be placed in conduit, laying it under the paving stones is the best option. If your patio is already installed, wires can be buried any place where no one will be digging in the future. For already-established patios, Mr. Vitiello usually runs stereo wires along the edge of pavers, under the edge of a paver walkway, or along a fence line after the fence has been installed. According to paving stone manufacturer EP Henry, pavers can be lifted to lay wires easily. “Since pavers are dry laid in a sand base, the ease of access under pavers even after they’ve been installed allows for simple installation of subsurface wiring,” said Marianne Anzaldo, EP Henry’s outdoor expert. “The pavers are re-laid easily.”

Outdoor wireless access to the home’s network helps a stereo system work. Most music systems are now controlled using a mobile phone application. Unlike bluetooth which is a nearby-communication technology, apps like Sonos use wireless internet signal to communicate with the main stereo component inside the house. Wifi boosters can be found easily at local electronic stores or online. A wifi extender plugs into any outlet and takes your existing wifi signal and amplifies it into the new area. It’s an easy install that will not only make your music experience better but will allow you to take that laptop outside on a sunny work-from-home day.

Outdoor speakers can be hidden in garden beds, hung under eaves or even housed in gigantic plastic “stones” made for this purpose. “They’re shaped like rocks. They come in gray for the east coast, sandstone for the west coast,” said Mr. Vitiello. “Lots of speakers are made to exist outdoors. Busy people don’t have a whole lot of time to listen to music. Maybe they hear it in the car on the way to work. Outdoors is where music gets used a lot, and it complements the space so well. An outdoor stereo system is like a ‘set it and forget it’ kind of solution.”

Outdoor living spaces like kitchens and bars, patios and pools aren’t meant to be enjoyed in silence. Think about how some sweet sounds can supercharge your backyard fun.
