FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mexico City has a powerful story to share as a model for other megacities around the globe using creativity to tackle the challenges of urbanization and ensure a more enjoyable city.

• Mexico City is a thriving metropolis and the heart of Mexico’s business, arts, culture and culinary industries, offering rich experiences for visitors of varying interests.
• It is Mexico’s business and touristic premier destination.
• There has never been a more exciting time to visit, as The New York Times named Mexico City the #1 destination on their annual list “52 Places to go”.
• The Mexico City Tourism Trust is pleased to present at the World Travel Market 2016 the offerings of this unique and amusing destination.

Mexico City sits atop many lists and world rankings because it surprises its visitors with amazing and original experiences: a new flavour, an unexpected adventure or the magic of its history, the options are endless in this city.

This thriving capital presents different alternatives for its visitors in a vibrant and contemporary destination that combines modern, colonial and pre-Hispanic influences dating back to 1325 (there are 7 hidden pyramids across the city).

As one of the largest cities in the world, Mexico City offers something for everyone and for every budget.

Mexico City’s connectivity is growing year after year. In 2016, new direct flights including destinations like Rome (Alitalia) and Amsterdam (Aeromexico), among others, were opened; daily flights operate from main European cities to Mexico’s capital. From London you can fly direct with British Airways (daily) and Aeromexico (6 days a week).

If you’re looking for art, you will see it everywhere. It’s not only street art, visitors can find wall murals all over the city, painted by Diego Rivera or David Alfaro Siqueiros, and sculptures and art works all around public spaces. With more than 180 museums, after London, Mexico City is home to the largest number of museums in the world, housing internationally acclaimed exhibitions, like Archaeology: Biology presented by London artist Anish Kapoor, which includes new works from the artist, shown for the first time, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, until November 27.

If that’s not enough, around the city you can find 4 cultural sites catalogued by UNESCO as World Heritage sites, considered to be of outstanding universal value to the humanity:

• Historic Centre of Mexico City (1987)
• Xochimilco (1987)
• Luis Barragán House and Studio (2004)
• The Central University City Campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) (2007)

Mexico City is one of the most important gastronomic destinations in the world, where you can enjoy, besides traditional Mexican food (listed by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity), dishes from all over the world, with 3 of the most renowned international restaurants.

But not only because of its history, culture, museums or gastronomic scene, Mexico City is exciting to visit; according to a study conducted by Canada-based independent research firm YouthfulCities, Mexico City is positioned in the top 10 as one of the most youthful cities in the world and took the top regional spot as the #1 in Latin America, scoring particularly high in terms of civic engagement and urban attractiveness from the perspective of youth.

For all this and more, Mexico City has won the nomination as World Design Capital for 2018; biennial designation given by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, which showcases cities that have successfully used design to reinvent themselves to improve the social, cultural and environmental lives of their citizens.

To learn more about Mexico City and its offer, visit the Mexico City Tourism Trust booth located in the Mexico Pavilion (LA-200) during Word Travel Market (7-9th Nov 2016), Excel Centre, London.
