The CEO of Goldman Sachs Bangalore, Mr. Bunty Bohra, held an interactive session with students of IIM Lucknow on the ingredients of a successful career. Mr. Bohra, a dual degree holder from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, became CEO of Goldman Sachs India in 2009, at the age of 35.
During the hour and a half long session, students posed questions ranging from ‘the factors that shape successful careers’ to ‘the benefits and risks of financial innovation’. Mr. Bohra answered these during his candid interaction, peppered with anecdotes from his personal and professional life.
He spoke about judging a career with two questions – “Am I enjoying what I am doing?” and “Is it going to take me in the direction I want to go?” – and spoke about the importance of building a profession.
Mr. Bohra linked success to freely accepting and working on constructive feedback, being coachable, being a good mentee and being worthy of sponsor, explaining each of these with his own experiences. He highlighted the importance of inquisitiveness and of building expertise and depth for success in any profession.
Students can take the lessons learnt from this session to the careers they finally pursue. This could include a career with Goldman Sachs, one of the top recruiters in IIM Lucknow’s summer internship and final placements.
