It has been discovered by a skip hire comparison site that residents of London pay more for their skips than anywhere else in the country. SkipandBin.com discovered, during their research to update their comparison tool, that 50% of London councils raised their skip prices by anything up to 28%. The four highest costing areas for skip permits are Kensington and Chelsea at £81 each, followed by Westminster at £78 and Redbridge at £75. Barnet saw the greatest increase, with a 2-week permit rising from £39 to £50.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jason Mohr, owner of SkipandBin and also of junk removal company AnyJunk, states that 5 out of the 10 worst areas of the country for fly-tipping are in London, and high skip costs are helping to perpetuate the problem in the capital's boroughs.

Mohr stated:

“Few people would argue with the council charging a fee to residents and construction firms for using public roads but between the increases in permit prices we’ve seen for Londoners this year and the Landfill tax changes which have also impacted on the cost of hiring a skip its been a bad year for London skip hire prices – which can only lead to an increase in fly-tipping – an activity which costs far more for councils to clean up than they can ever recoup through skip permits.”

Further skip charges can be incurred through "parking" fees for skips and administration costs such as credit card fees. Most boroughs have a minimum time period for permits too, so even if you're only using a skip for a weekend you have to buy a 2-week permit. In addition to all this, skip permit issuing has been restricted during the Olympics, making it a difficult summer for both skip hire companies and their customers.

Mohr said of the Olympics:

“Obviously the Olympics have been a great success for the city and the clear roads policy in certain borough’s has helped to ensure things have run smoothly but I think a lot of skip hire companies feel that local councils are working against them and failing to appreciate that efficient waste removal is an important part of the infrastructure and economy of London.”

Up-to-date skip hire permit prices can be found using skipandbin.com's free tool along with other information regarding hire of skips.
