Founded in 1883, the organization was named in honor of pioneering woodmen who cleared forests to build homes and communities and provide security for their families. Modern Woodmen of America was created to clear away family financial difficulties. While its founding mission has remained, Modern Woodmen’s products and services have changed to meet the changing needs of today’s families. Based in Rock Island, Ill., the organization serves more than 760,000 members nationwide.
