From the time you are a child you share one common experience with everyone else on the planet. No, it's not making mud pies. It's that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach that makes your heart beat fast, your muscles tense up, your breathing get heavier-fear. Like it or not, fear is a part of life. It is in our DNA. Whether its fear of getting caught doing something you shouldn't be doing or fear that something will happen to you or the ones you love, it is always with you . It makes you wonder -- if fear is programmed into us, why some people are able to grab hold of it, stare it in the face and conquer it, while others allow it to overtake their lives, leaving them uncertain about how to proceed.
One reason may be that fear is usually triggered when you have to make a decision about something significant in your life -- your job, family or personal security. The fear associated with this decision brings about doubt and indecisiveness and in the end we do nothing. There is a great quote from William Shakespeare about this, "Our doubts are traitors that make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt."
The Problem Is-We Remember the Fear
And it's not just the fear itself, it's how you remember it. Every time you experience something, your mind records whether you had a positive or a negative response to it. Your brain stores this information deep in your subconscious and the next time the situation occurs, it recreates your past reaction. That's why it's important to examine your fear - it is the only way to build the resolve to face it.
It's like having a nightmare. If you wake up and realize it was all a dream, it isn't as scary anymore. So it stands to reason, if a fearful situation occurs and you believe it is not insurmountable, that you can overcome it and you will. On the other hand, if you believe it will destroy you, it might.
Our minds are more powerful than we realize. Although some circumstances are beyond our control, many times we have to make a choice. That's when we either embrace fear as our "friend" or cower away from it as a "foe". What will you do -- surrender and run or stand up and fight?
Positive Thinking is Key
Having a positive "can-do" attitude is essential to overcoming your fears. Negative thoughts are contagious, and invade other experiences you may have. Choose to be positive and surround ourselves with others who believe in your ability to defeat your fears and move on. In my own life I have found that once I stood up to the negative voice of fear in my head, I gained new courage and wisdom on how to handle the situation. I have experienced this in a number of ways, including when I've given a speech to a large audience, or before I've gone skiing down a mountain. When you consciously tell yourself, "I can handle this", you can deprogram that fear and bring forth your ability to succeed.
Here are a few more suggestions on how to take a positive stance against fear:
Begin by realizing that what you have done in the past does not determine what you will do in the future. You can reprogram your reactions to fear.
Create new positive messages for yourself. Write them down and say them to yourself on a daily basis. It really works!
Find someone in your life that you consider "brave" and ask them what they do when confronted with fear. What do they tell themselves?
Read a motivational book on how to conquer your fears.
Start to see the glass as half full instead of half empty.
Never give in to your fears. They will rob you of a fantastic journey.
Standing up to your fears is certainly not the easiest thing to do, but, like exercising, it's something we do because it is good for us and our life. Begin today to break free of your fear with the following affirmation.
I am fearless!
I have limitless potential.
Every day in every way I am dedicated to my good and to the good of others.
