What: Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, Alzheimer’s Association Long Island, presents “Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters.” In her presentation, Ms. Malack-Ragona will describe the top 10 warning signs to look for in someone who may have Alzheimer’s disease and what to do if you notice any of these signs. She will also give an overview of what the disease is, how it affects the body, the risk factors that may determine if you have the disease, the benefits of early diagnosis, available medications for Alzheimer’s patients, how to plan for the future and the resources that are available for those afflicted with Alzheimer’s and their families. Also included are video clips showing interviews with people with Alzheimer’s who talk about how the disease affects their lives and how they are coping with it.
AALI has expanded its reach into Eastern Long Island with the grand opening of its satellite office in October 2011 at 33 Flying Point Road, Suites 121/122 in Southampton. The new facility will provide services and education to Eastern Long Island residents who may be afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease and their families.
There are 5.4 million people in the U.S. who are afflicted with Alzheimer’s. Of that number, 60,000 live here on Long Island. In the coming years, the Association expects to see a drastic increase in these numbers if a cure is not found. Currently, one in eight people over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s disease.
