A new poll from dedicated money-saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk has revealed that 25 percent of UK citizens don't know how much money their partner makes each year

06 FEBRUARY 2012 – A new poll from dedicated money-saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk has revealed that 25 percent of UK citizens don't know how much money their partner makes each year.
The website's poll found that 27.25 percent of people are in the dark as regards their partner's pay, with women appearing to be more guarded about their money than men - double the number of women polled said they had private bank accounts. 8 percent of women claim to have a 'hidden' bank account somewhere versus 4 percent of men.
The voucher codes website's poll also revealed that women are more liable to lie regarding the amount of money they may have spent on a new outfit, with 43 percent admitting to this in comparison with 17 percent of male respondents. The main reason given by female respondents for this was guilt.
The poll, which analysed British consumers' spending habits, also found that a particularly underhand 40 percent of people sometimes open their partner’s bank and credit card statements. Almost 1 in 10 Brits admitted to not bothering to check or pay attention to their credit card bills and bank statements each month.
Psychologist Dr Penny Goldsbrough commented: “There is a very clear element of fear of the unknown to this, and also lack of self esteem. Not wanting to trust your partner can lead to taking sneaky looks at their financial records or cause people to squirrel money away in private accounts.”
Dr Goldsbrough continues: “We often find that women are influenced by their mothers, and so if your mother tended to hide the price of a new dress or something then daughters often do too. We are often guilty about spending money but cannot necessarily help spending money.”
