FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT

Kaplan University, a leading provider of online education for adult learners, raised a record $30,000 for three local nonprofit organizations at its fifth annual charity golf tournament on May 2. Proceeds of $10,000 each were given to Children’s Home Society of Florida Intercoastal Division (Broward County), the Children’s Home Society South Coastal Division (Palm Beach County) and the Urban League of Broward County. The money will fund various education-related programs and emergency care services for local youth.

“We are thrilled to continue our tradition of giving back to our community and supporting the local organizations that mean so much to so many in South Florida,” said Lisa Gefen Sicilian, chief administrative officer of Kaplan Higher Education. “Kaplan University remains committed to supporting the community where our employees live and work.”

Held at Palm-Aire Country Club in Pompano Beach, the tournament drew participation from more than 200 players, many of whom are employees at the university’s Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton-based online student support centers. Other guests at the event included celebrity player John Denny of the Miami Dolphins. Following the afternoon tournament, participants attended an awards banquet and presentation of proceeds to the benefiting organizations. The tournament was made possible with support from 18 sponsors, including the event’s title sponsor, Cengage Learning.

“Kaplan has been a strong supporter of the Urban League of Broward County for many years and is always ready to lend a helping hand,” said Dr. Germaine Smith Baugh, president and CEO for Urban League of Broward County. “Not only does it provide financial support, but each year Kaplan University supplies more than 1,800 youth with backpacks and sends dozens of volunteers to Urban League’s annual ‘back to school’ rally. Kaplan’s commitment to community is top notch and we are grateful for this strong partnership.”

Last year, Kaplan was able to make a combined donation of $22,500 to all three organizations. At the Urban League of Broward County, the support received from Kaplan allowed needy children to be prepared for the first day of school. The funding and Kaplan volunteers supported its annual “back to school” rally, which included backpacks provided to local youth. At CHS’ South Coastal Division in Palm Beach County, funds from Kaplan have been used to cover costs involved with the organization’s MODEL mentoring program, which provides mentors for local children who have an incarcerated parent. At CHS’ Intercoastal Division in Broward County, proceeds have supported children residing in the I. Lorraine Thomas Children's Emergency Home and Family Support Center. The Center provides emergency care to children that have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, abandonment and/or exploitation.

"Children's Home Society of Florida is deeply indebted to Kaplan University for its continued support of our program throughout the years,” said Beatrice Gaviria, mentoring programs supervisor for CHS’ South Coastal Division. “Kaplan's contributions have made a profound impact on the countless children and mentors that CHS has brought together through its mentoring program. Funding for our children often helps many of them see for the first time that someone truly cares for them. We are sincerely grateful for Kaplan's contributions to CHS."

“With Kaplan University’s help, our Emergency Home was able to provide a safe and loving environment for 165 children last year,” added Rosemarie Stiegele, director of development for CHS’ Intercoastal Division. “It is a wonderful feeling to see organizations such as Kaplan continue to help children in our community.”
